Blurb: There’s a fine line between love… and lies.
Officer Sinead O’Hara was just answering a house alarm call. She couldn’t have predicted the man standing at the front door was going to change her life forever.
David Whitemore, a hot, rich, Brit is completely out of her league. When he suddenly asks her out, Sinead decides to shake up her dull, boring life. Who wouldn’t want to be Cinderella for a day?
David is the kind of man she can’t say no to. The kind of man who pushes her limits in and out of bed. The kind of man she can’t help falling in love with.
The kind of man who leaves her heart in ruins once Sinead discovers his secrets.
She wanted him. She trusted him. He betrayed her. Now she wants revenge.
First – she has to catch him.
It was the blurb that got me excited enough to give this new to me author a try. Female cop, hot British dude (cue the accent), a con gone bad and I was ready. For some reason, even though the hero was described as hotter than Jax from Sons of Anarchy, I couldn’t help but picture the actor from the show Lucifer from the very beginning.
Sinead and David meet when he sets off the alarms at the home of a friend and Sinead is sent over to check it out. She is instantly attracted and after doing everything she needed to clear David from a suspected breaking and entering charge, David asks her out to dinner and Sinead accepts, against her better judgement and totally against all protocol. David wines and dines her, going so far as to buy her a dress and heels when she balks at his choice of restaurant because she feels that she is inappropriately dressed. Over the course of his time in San Francisco, they continue to see each other and it’s clear that they are on their way toward something really meaningful.
Sinead is no dummy and has grown up in a world where things are more gray than black and white. Her father had been a policeman as well, but fell from grace after some shady backroom deals robbed him of his job and career. Her mom died when she was young and her dad never really recovered from that loss. And Sinead is well aware of the whispers and glares. She’s also coming off a not great relationship and the attention that David gives her makes her feel sexy and special, but she’s determined to just take it one day at a time because she knows that all this has an expiration date. David will, at some point, leave San Francisco and leave her.
David was super yummy. I could hear his accent in my head as I read and he really was every girl’s dream prince. Rich, handsome and super charismatic, it would have been impossible for Sinead to ignore his charm especially when he directed all of it right at her. But if something seems too good to be true, it usually is and David has certainly has some skeletons in his closet. It’s a definite case of doing something wrong for all the right reasons. He is really easy to love in spite of his secrets.
Their whirlwind romance does have an expiration date, and Sinead was okay with that until she broke her own rules and let herself start to feel something beyond just having a good time. When Sinead realizes that David was just using her as a pawn in his plan, she wants revenge and she sets out to make him pay!
Secondary characters in the form of David’s business partners Jillian and Flynn, add to the intrigue and mystery of David’s other life. Brought together by their work, they have a uniquely strong bond with each other that feels more familial than simply work related. In this particular mission they come together to protect and rescue David’s sister from an abusive husband, but there is so, so much more to it than just that.
I really enjoyed this story. At about 180 pages, the story moves along at a good pace but at no time did it feel rushed or predictable. In fact, as there is a bit of suspense behind who David truly is and what he is hiding or protecting, I was surprised when I noticed the actual page count. Though a stand alone, I’m hoping the author has plans to write a book for Flynn. Though he had very little page time, his quiet, controlled yet lethal demeanor just oozed sexy and I just can’t wait to see him lose control.
