While this is book one in the Descended of Guardians series, it’s a spin-off of Setta Jay’s lengthy, Guardians of the Realms series. I’ll admit I was a little lost. I grasped the overall world – The four realms, including heaven, hell and an immortal land, all rose, killing humans and exposing to earth immortal beings. Three decades have passed since then – and humans and those with magic are learning to live in this changing plane of Earth.
This is a novella – maybe coming in around 150 pages. This world is made up of a lot of different types of people and this story gets weighed down a bit as the author has to describe what this God can do, or what this vampire can do, or what this shapeshifter can do. It’s a lot and it was hard for me to grasp it all in such a short book.
What shines in this novella is the lust and forbidden romance between our hero and heroine. Destined to be mates, our heroine Lucy, tells the younger Rykr, that he needs to experience life before being formally mated to her. When he is 15, she pushes him away and makes him promise to stay away for ten years – so he has no regrets when it’s time for them to bond. What she doesn’t know is shortly after her ultimatum, he gets cursed, and now carries demons inside of him. He is scared that if he bonds with Lucy, his demons, which torture him every day, will transfer to her. He stays away, trying to find a cure.
Close to the ten-year mark, a man who Rykr thinks has something to do with his demons, comes in close contact with Lucy. Scared, Rykr approaches her and tells her all about the curse. Lucy isn’t one to shy away from danger, and instead of staying far away, she goes to him, demons be damned! He tries to push her away – he really does!
She changed tactics. “Don’t pretend you don’t want me. Or that my tattoos aren’t driving you wild right now, because you keep staring at them like they hold your salvation.”
An animalistic sound slipped from his lips, suddenly he was a little closer.
They eventually have super hot sex, intense sex (they’ve been waiting a long time!)
I don’t want to give away the plot or twists – but I will say the problem of the demons gets resolved very quick and easy.
When Lucy and Rykr are together, I was definitely into this book. Otherwise there are characters we meet that didn’t really add a lot to the story. And I felt like there were some scenes that just didn’t flow that well. Maybe it’s just because I’m completely new to this world and had I known these characters from previous books, I would have loved seeing them again?
If this was a full length book that took it’s time in unfolding the world and building up the demon issue, I would have enjoyed it more.
