Angela’s Monday Mornings

December 3, 2018 by Angela Leave a Comment

My review of Hailey Edward’s Death Knell (Foundling #3) will post later today.

What I read this week:

My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren
Contemporary Romance
December 4, 2018 by Gallery Books

Favorite Quote:

“Unusual? No. She’s super funny.” Now I’m torn between insult that he doesn’t realize that I’m super funny, and swooning that he’s talking about me and doesn’t even know it. Holy shit, this is both incredibly sweet and incredibly fucking stupid.”

Friends to lovers is probably my favorite trope. I lurves it. So, so much. There’s just something about great friends slowly realizing they’ve been in love for years and didn’t realize it, then ripping each other’s clothes off and having a crazy, sweaty night between the sheets followed by fear ruining their friendship that gets me every time.

The newest release by Christina Lauren features two best friends, who are part of a wonderfully fun and weird friend group. Millie is the only female and the only non-science inclined professor in their group of academics. She first meets Reid when introduced  by her now ex-boyfriend at a work event. It’s not too much later when she sits down at a table with him and three of his friends in a bar and fits in seamlessly. She becomes just one of the guys. The five of them spending all their free time together. That is until talk of a commencement banquet starts and all kinds of questions about dates and who is bringing who gets bandied about and a dating app is mentioned and well… that’s when the sparks fly and the trouble starts.

I’m not going to ruin this book for you by giving an exact run down of what happens between Millie and Reid, but I will say that I read this book straight through from beginning to end and really, really enjoyed it. I probably haven’t enjoyed a Christina Lauren book this much since falling in love with Hanna and Will in Beautiful Player. There is something about this group of friends that is charming and real and makes you smile at their antics and comfort with each other. I loved the academia vibe and the university setting. I adored how awesomely geeky and wonderfully unique every character was drawn. I can honestly say that this book captured my attention from the first scene and held it until the very last page.

I wanted to be mad at Millie the entire novel for the way the lied to Reid, but I just couldn’t be. I wanted Reid to see what was right in front of him the whole time, but was kind of glad he didn’t until the very end. I loved all the group texts and getting to know you by IM over the dating app and for some reason I kind of felt like I got to know the characters even better because of them. The chemistry between Reid and Millie was palpable and I truly enjoyed their romance from the initial half-night stand right up to the HEA. Their developing relationship and conflict felt realistic and completely believable to me.

I’m putting this one on my favorites shelf and am already looking forward to a reread. Final Grade- A

My TBR:

Secret Lives (Secret McQueen #9) by Sierra Dean– I’m positively giddy to find out what Secret has been doing since the got married and went full human. Review will post next week.

Clockwork Boys (Clocktaur War #1) by T. Kingfisher– I saw this mentioned on Twitter somewhere, which had me heading to Goodreads to check it out. Here’s the blurb:

A paladin, an assassin, a forger, and a scholar ride out of town. It’s not the start of a joke, but rather an espionage mission with deadly serious stakes. T. Kingfisher’s new novel begins the tale of a murderous band of criminals (and a scholar), thrown together in an attempt to unravel the secret of the Clockwork Boys, mechanical soldiers from a neighboring kingdom that promise ruin to the Dowager’s city.

If they succeed, rewards and pardons await, but that requires a long journey through enemy territory, directly into the capital. It also requires them to refrain from killing each other along the way! At turns darkly comic and touching, Clockwork Boys puts together a broken group of people trying to make the most of the rest of their lives as they drive forward on their suicide mission.

Also, KJ Charles has a review recommending it. ONE-CLICK.

The Wonder Engine (Clocktaur War #2) by T. Kingfisher– Might as well one-click both books in the series while I’m on Amazon.

Oh, btw… blurb:

Pull three people out of prison–a disgraced paladin, a convicted forger, and a heartless assassin. Give them weapons, carnivorous tattoos, and each other. Point them at the enemy.

What could possibly go wrong?
