Nightchaser by Amanda Bouchet
Endeavor #1
Science Fiction Romance
January 1, 2019
A delicious new heart-pounding romantic adventure from USA Today bestseller Amanda Bouchet!
Captain Tess Bailey and her crew of Robin Hood-like thieves are desperate and on the run. Pursued by a vicious military general who wants them dead or alive, Tess has to decide if she can trust Shade Ganavan, a tall, dark and arrogant stranger with ambiguous motivations.
Shade Ganavan had oodles of arrogance, oodles of charm, and oodles of something that made me want to kick him in the nuts.
What Tess and Shade don’t know about each other might get them killed…unless they can set aside their differences and learn to trust each other—while ignoring their off-the-charts chemistry.
THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD. I’m super excited about this new series from Amanda Bouchet. Maybe even more excited than I was about her Kingmaker Chronicles and that’s saying something.
Nightchaser introduces readers to Tess Bailey, the tough as nails captain of the Endeavor. We drop in right as she and her crew of space pirates are escaping the clutches of the Overseer and his galactic warlords. Thinking she’s stealing vaccines, Tess soon realizes that what’s in the lab that is sealed to the side of her ship is something the Overseer will do anything to get back.
After barely escaping and with just enough power to make on to an out of the way planet, Tess finds and hires Shade Ganavan to repair her badly damaged ship. There is something about him that she likes and she gradually starts to trust him, even as Shade hides his true motives. They have chemistry and an undeniable attraction that keeps bringing them together. But Shade has to decide what he wants more… the inheritance he’s been trying to buy back for years or Tess.
This was such a wild ride. I kind of forgot that Ms. Bouchet’s newest release was to be a science fiction romance, so when I sat down to read and was dropped right into the middle of an action scene it got my adrenalin pumping and I was immediately all in. Tess has this amazing backstory that the author doesn’t tease readers with too long, she kind of just puts it out there right away and then lets the details kind of unfold throughout the story.
I read A LOT of science fiction, so at times the worldbuilding can feel redundant, but Nightchaser felt fresh and different. Maybe it was the hints about the backgrounds of Tess and her crew members, who are also her closest friends and found family. The worldbuilding was well developed, but still feels like it could expand so much more.
The romance between Tess and Shade takes awhile to get there, but when it does… YUMMY. Their chemistry shines from the moment they meet and I loved that the author took awhile to build it up so that I was more than ready by the time they finally fell into bed.
My only complaint is that the next book in the series doesn’t come out until next year. I can’t wait.
Final grade- B+
