Wistful/Wanton Wednesday: Fire in Her Eyes by Ruby Dixon

August 14, 2019 by Sheena 1 Comment

Cool cover- check. Post-apocalypticish paranormally romance with strong female lead- check. Ruby Dixon. Checkity, check, check, check! I’ve so (so!) been looking forward to this book and it did not disappoint. These kind of stories tend to lean heavily on reliable trope: alien male finds his one true human mate, he glowers, she fights it, and by then end we are all swooning. Fire in Her Eyes, turns the tables and the otherworldly Drakoni protagonist is a dangerously protective and possessive dragon lady Teva, who’s sniffed out her male, the human, Gabe and she’ll stop at nothing to claim him! This is the latest in a 7 book series and the story arc is evolving as we learn more about how the dragons survived the rift that brought them to the human world. The further the series goes, the harder I think it may be to pop into the series. Readers would greatly benefit from starting this series at the beginning, though, honestly, there is just enough context that a casual reader would definitely follow along. However, the best part of these tales is the emotional investment and that just comes with time spent with these characters. Gabe is my favorite male perspective. I love being in his head- mostly- he has a nickname for Teva that is kind of corny and is a little cringy, but aside from that mild annoyance (argh!) I couldn’t have enjoyed Gabe more. I’m always concerned when the human male is the hero because I’ve spent however many books romanticizing the large and in charge non-human male, so I become startlingly biased and think “tuh- puny human! Can he even spit fire or protect her with his claws!?” Dixon must know these things because not only is Gabe more than sufficient, it doesn’t matter much if he’s as badassy as my pedestal poised dragons, because SHE is more than capable and her badass protective instincts are more than enough for the both of them.

For months, I’ve been chased by a red dragon. They’re the females of the dragon shifter invaders, fierce and vicious and as ruthless as they are wild. She hunts me wherever I go, and I’m not safe even behind the walls of a fort. There’s only one thing I can do to stop her…

…And that’s to take her as my mate.

But to win the heart of a female dragon, I have to conquer her first. Not so easy for a human man…but Teva’s worth the challenge.

The Wistful…

There is nothing better than flying… save perhaps a quick and dirty mating with Gabe, one that ends with pleasure.

“Holy fuck!” he calls from below me. I can feel his hands gripping my claws tightly, as if worried I will drop him.

“How did you get so high so quickly?”

There’s a hint of fear in him, but it’s quickly overpowered by wonder. He, too, is enjoying the flight. Because I am strong, I tell him proudly. He laughs, breathless.

“You really, really are. Hot damn.”

I love his joy. I love that he loves this part of me, too. He has no battle form, but he does not resent mine. I can carry you all the time, I offer eagerly. You weigh nothing at all when I am in battle form. I hold him tight in my claws and tilt my wings, letting us circle lazily in the sky. There is no joy quite like flying.

“Think you could wear a saddle? A harness? So I could sit more securely?”

Even though his voice is ripped away in the wind, I can see the mental images he is projecting—a way for him to be seated upon my back, tucked safely between my shoulder blades. Of course. If that would make you more comfortable, I would happily do so.

“Man, I would fucking love that, Teva. You’re amazing.”

The Wanton…

“You like it when I hold you like this, Teva?”

Your Teva, she replies, and it’s full of excitement and liquid heat. Make me yours.

“I’m gonna take you just like this, then,” I say, sliding my cock over her slick folds once more. She feels hot, yes, but it’s a good kind of hot. Just this side of scorching, and I love it. I love the way she looks at me, too, the need in her mind that’s so full of arousal and excitement, as if she can barely stand it. This is a girl that’ll never fake an orgasm, that’s for sure.

She moans low…. I settle my cockhead at her entrance and thrust deep, She hisses, but the sound’s sexy as fuck and I can feel her startled pleasure at facing me as I thrust into her. Her eyes go wide and her gaze meets mine in pure gold emotion…She picked up on my thoughts. That’s something I’ll need to get used to. I thrust into her again, feeling her greedy pussy clench tight around my cock. She feels incredible, her channel snug around my cock, gripping me like a vise. The only thing that feels better than the hot grip of her cunt? The pleasure rolling through her mind that tells me just how much she likes this, how good it feels, how needy she is. Her thoughts are so overwhelming I know I’m not going to last long. I don’t care. I’ve claimed her, and the lizard part of my brain is stoked. She’s mine now. All mine.

Fire in Her Eyes smolders. Burns, singes, teases and pleases! Very, very sexy read. Comedic relief and action are also pleasantly weaved into the story. This title is available now via Kindle Unlimited, so if you like this sub-genre even a little, I encourage you to check it out!
