Angela’s Minis- Fantasy/PNR Reviews for books by Shelly Laurenston, Sierra Dean, and MaryJanice Davidson

Badger to the Bone by Shelly Laurenston
Honey Badger Chronicles #3

I’m still surprised when I find readers who love PNR, but still haven’t picked up a Shelly Laurenston book. I mean if you love zany, laugh out loud humor and a crazy good time, this is the author for you.

I won’t even get into the plot but suffice it to say it’s full of ups and downs and wild and crazy characters. This is Max’s story and it begins when she rushes headlong into her own kidnapping and ends up rescuing a man who has no idea he is a shifter. A jaguar shifter to be exact. Her protective instincts kick in and when she is ordered by her sisters to help him navigate through the shifter world and learn about his nature she complies. (Despite her normal difficult, surly personality.) In the meantime she and her sisters have a lot to deal with when their family/enemies come calling.

If you’re here for the romance, this is typical of the series and takes a slight backseat to the hijinks and shenanigans. But, this is classic Shelly Laurenston fun so if you enjoy this author this book will absolutely work for you.

Final grade- B

Bears Behaving Badly by MaryJanice Davidson

I wanted to like this. I kept reading past the point I would have normally called it quits in another book, hoping for a spark. But…. I finally called it quits at round 40%.

Bears Behaving Badly is the first book in a new series by MaryJanice Davidson. This is an author I remember reading and enjoying way back when, and I kind of wanted to pick her up again and see if I would enjoy her as much as I had in the past.

Ms. Davidson introduces an entire new world of shifters and her main protagonists work in the shifter version of child protective services/juvenile courts. They discover a big criminal ring involving two of the children they are protecting. This is some serious subject matter and the light, almost comedic, banter between the main characters during some of their investigating threw me off. I never really connected to anyone in this world so it was an easy decision to skim to the end and then set it aside.

Not my cuppa, but might appeal to fans of the genre.

Final grade- DNF

A Wicked Secret by Sierra Dean
Secret McQueen #10
Urban Fantasy

I was surprised last year when Ms. Dean released a new book in a series that I’d thought was finished. I had already moved on to Secret’s sister Genie’s series and was content with random cameos by beloved characters. Then I read Secret Lives and reconnected with Secret, Desmond and crew. So I was more than ready for more books in this world.

I’ve been in kind of a book funk for awhile and A Wicked Secret was exactly what I needed to kick start my reading week. This is an exciting, edge of your seat read from the first page right up until the moment this author leaves readers with a big, fat question mark with the last sentence. I loved it.

When Secret and Desmond get word that Lucas, who is back from the dead and off the grid on a sabbatical, has been taken captive by the Werewolf King in Peru, they immediately fly out to rescue him. Their only backup is Harry, Secret’s demon partner and a local FBI agent. Thus begins a wild, wicked adventure in the jungles of Peru where Secret and crew are up against a madman on a power trip who has given them an impossible task to complete before they can get Lucas and head home.

I really enjoyed everything about this book. From the high intensity, edge of your seat action scenes, to being back in Secret’s head, to getting more Desmond and finally seeing some answers to important relationship questions that has been a tender spot between them. A lot happens to drive the new series arc forward, and I’m not sure what it will all mean for the future. I was surprised at some of the new developments, but excited that it will mean more Secret in the future.

Final grade- B+
