Angela’s TBR Update

December 14, 2020 by Angela 3 Comments

I still have ARCs to read before the end of the year, but I also have a TON of books sitting on my TBR that I’ve really been looking forward to reading. So I decided to skip some of my must read books, and jump over to my massive TBR list.

*All of the titles listed below are available on Kindle Unlimited

I discovered Annette Marie’s Guild Codex series when it was just Tori and her three mage BFFs fighting the bad guys. This series evolved into quite an exciting, edge of your seat urban fantasy adventure and has spun off into several new series’ that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. Lost Talismans and a Tequila and Damned Souls and a Sangria are books 7 and 8 and wrap up Tori and crew’s story quite nicely. I needed a good solid ending for Tori and Ezra, but I also needed to know that Kai, Aaron, and the rest of the Crow and Hammer were left in a good place. And they were.

Delivering Evil for Experts is the 4th book in the first spin-off series, Guild Codex: Demonized. If I’m being picky, I think I enjoy Zylas and Robin more than any other characters in all of the Guild Codex world. This is also the last book in the series and OMG, I loved it so hard. I really, really love where this author left this couple and their HEA. Probably one of my best reads of the year.

These last three books all take place kind of simultaneously, so they need to be read in the order I have listed here or you will jump ahead and be spoiled. I’m so happy I discovered this author in Kindle Unlimited. There two more spin-off series in this fascinating world and I will absolutely be reading them.

Hailey Edwards is one of my favorite UF authors and I can’t help but drop everything when she has a new release. The Potentate of Atlanta is the spin-off from The Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy and features Hadley and Midas. I was a little unsure how I would feel about this series considering who Hadley really is and her behavior in the Necromancy series, but I’ve really grown to love and understand her.

Also, she and Midas together are Mmmm good.

Readers finally get some more backstory on Hadley’s shitty mother and the abuse she suffered in her care. Midas and Hadley are becoming closer and finally getting comfortable with each other and their mated status. That they both have severe trauma in their pasts has helped them understand each other. Hadley is part of the pack now and has a real family that will always love and support her.

There is a series plot arc that I believe we are finally going to see some resolution to in the next installment and I am glad for it. I’m so excited for the next release, Moment of Truth, which comes out 1/31/2021.

First of all, if you love science fiction and/or barbarian fantasy romance and you haven’t started this series yet, you need to get on that ASAP.

Secondly, for those of you who HAVE started this series and fallen in love (because I know you can’t help but adore this world) were you aware that that there was a new release this month? Madness of the Horde King came out on the 8th and I literally set aside everything I was doing to download it to my Kindle.

The third book features the mad horde king and a human woman who is sent to the main city by an enemy of the Dakkar with a warning. I won’t even get into the plot because I would end up giving away a ton of spoilers and honestly? There are a ton of names and words that make up this universe that I don’t want to have to look up the spelling for them. Am I lazy? Probably. Lol.

I’m pretty much obsessed with this series, so I had super high expectations going in, and mostly they were met. I didn’t connect with this heroine quite as much as I did with the previous two in the series, but I did like her and think she was the perfect mate for her hero. The love story between these two is really well written and almost swoon-worthy at times. Especially toward the end when the action picks up and Vienne’s life is threatened.

And the sex scenes are scorching hot.

I do wonder where this series goes from here. Kind of hoping the plan is to keep skipping around and meeting all of the Horde Kings until they all have their HEA. Here for that big time.

I simply adore this author’s voice. I keep telling myself I am going to pick up more of her backlist, but I haven’t yet. I really need to make that a priority in the new year.

I read the first book in the Horde Kings series “Captive of the Horde King” on the weekend because of your mention of the series (last week?). I enjoyed it a lot. It found it sort of similar in tone to Kristen Ashley’s “The Golden Dynasty”. It feels like barbarian/alien romances are having a moment, or at least I am noticing them more.

It felt a lot like The Golden Dynasty series to me too when I first started reading. I think it moves away from it when you get deeper into the series.

Also, I’m here for all the barbarian romance.
