This was a surprise of a book for me and I’m so happy that I read it. Finn and Vivi meet while Finn is incarcerated and Vivi is the Nurse in the prison. It’s extremely clear nothing happens while there is such a clear power imbalance between the two of them and for that I was very glad. But while nothing happens it is obvious there are some sparks flying and when Vivi just disappears one day Finn is crushed.

8 months later Finn is out of prison and trying to adjust to life and find a job. One of the things I loved about this book is that it felt like this was such a realistic portrayal of someone trying to get on their feet after being incarcerated. Finn’s struggle much with both her disability and finding a job was never romanticized in any way – it was just part of her daily life and I appreciated the care that was taken with these. Finn takes steps to slowly reclaim her previous life, such as getting an undercut, which makes her feel like herself again.

The other aspect of the book that is done so well is the disability rep – Finn gets severe migraines, to the point that she is unable to function. She runs into Vivi at a clinic when attempting to get her medicine for these. Vivi goes into Nurse mode and wants to take care of her. There’s some really great respecting of boundaries happening where neither is sure what the other is thinking. Finn has to worry about finding a job, figure out where to live, and to function while in severe pain…and yet she can’t fight her feelings. Vivi also has major events happening in her life and doesn’t want to make Finn feel like she is overstepping any lines.

For a novella there is a lot going on in this book but I really liked all of it. Beyond the realistic portrayal of disability and life after prison, there was such a range of identities – pan, bisexual, straight, they just were present and not a big deal. This felt much more realistic than the ‘there can be only one’ that I hate seeing. For all of that, this is actually a cute, fluffy book!
