I can’t tell you how happy I was to get back to the world of vampires, werewolves, demon FBI agents, and Secret McQueen.
Secret is a full werewolf after the events in Peru and she, Desmond, and Lucas are back in New York dealing with the fallout. Now that Lucas is officially back from the dead Secret has two husbands and if the sessions at their counselor are any indication the three of them aren’t dealing with it all very well. Desmond is mad at Lucas for being the one who changed her (understandable), Lucas isn’t really sincere in his apology (jerk), and Secret is just a mess like she usually is (of course).
On top of all that, Calliope has gone missing and The Tribunal has asked for Secret’s help in finding her, there is a werewolf in town that seems hellbent on threatening Desmond’s place as King of the East and Secret’s role as his Queen, and well… there is a new FBI office for supernatural affairs ready to be set up and an all-new staff that has to be introduced.
It’s always nice to pick up a book and fall right back into the world so easily. At this point, I feel like these characters are old friends I get to check in on about once a year. In this installment, readers get to catch up on what’s going on with pack politics since Secret’s wolf is now a permanent part of her and her human days are long gone. She has a lot going on (as always).
Her search for Calliope wasn’t as dramatic as I thought it would be, but it does lead to some big consequences that are sure to feature in a huge way in future installments. Especially since she has now altered her relationship with the tribunal and owes a debt to the very last person anyone wants to owe a debt to. The rogue werewolf plotline was well done and has convinced me that Secret is one with her wolf and more than happy in her place as queen to Desmond’s king. I still love them together. I was also happy to see there was some movement on them and Lucas trying to figure out how to dissolve once and for all the bond between her and Lucas.
And of course, the last sentence has me jonesing for the next book in the series. O.M.G.
All in all, this was another great addition to the Secret McQueen world. Fans of this series will be satisfied with how this newest release keeps readers interested and engaged with these characters and their supernatural shenanigans. I sure hope it’s not too long a wait for another adventure.
Final grade- B
