Looking forward to the rerelease of three Serena Bell books (starting with DO OVER) this month. And Julie Kriss’s DUET. Kriss is one of the most underrated writers in Romancelandia imho. I want to read HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER, but $10.99 is too rich for my blood; I’m going to have to wait for a sale.
Also, somewhat o/t, but Sawyer Bennett’s Pittsburgh Titans series are all based around what happens to an NHL team when the entire team is killed in a plane crash. I know a good writer can make any topic work (for example, Roni Loren’s books about the survivors of a school shooting), but doesn’t making a fatal plane crash the premise of a romantic series seem a little, I don’t know, tasteless?
I can think of a couple of cases where that happened in real life – the Marshall University football team, which they based the movie We are Marshall on. Also the 1961 US Figure Skating team, which I don’t think anyone has fictionalized. I think it takes a sensitive writer to do something like this well. This wouldn’t stop me from reading the book, but I probably would have very high expectations on the sensitivity of the book.
Right now on Twitter, some romance writers have posted about how they think the President of Ukraine will become the template for a romance book hero, which others have taken exception to, feeling it is tasteless to talk about him as if he is an actor in a movie, and not a real life person who is in extreme danger but being brave nonetheless. Life is complicated, and not everything needs to be written about. It is probably better not to base things closely on sad current events unless you are a particularly skilled writer.
Agreed. It takes an extremely skilled writer to take a real-life tragedy and create a romance that doesn’t feel exploitive. Back in the 1950s, many of the players of the Manchester United football (soccer) team were killed in a plane crash—no romance novels (that I’m aware of) have been inspired by it, but Morrisey wrote a song about it (“Munich Air Disaster 1958”).
