Grey’s Anatomy meets a gender-swapped Wedding Crashers in this spicy rom-com about a one-night stand with The One, walking the tightrope of love and workplace ethics, and knowing which rules are worth breaking.
Honestly? This is a perfect description of this book.
Change of Heart introduces Whitney Aldritch, a transplant surgeon who with her BFF crashes weddings once a year on a girl’s vacation. These two are experienced crashers and have a complete rule list that they follow. Usually. On the very last wedding of the trip, Whitney finds herself fascinated with the best man, and ends up spending a hot and heavy night with him. Which is clearly against the rules. But she quietly leaves the next morning, convinced that she’ll never see her one-night stand again.
Henry Hazlette has been thinking about the woman he spent a sexy night with after his best friend’s wedding. He’s determined to find her, even if he can’t find her name on any of the guest lists or her face in any of the group pictures. He’s at the beginning of his surgical residency, busy beyond belief, but simply must find the woman he can’t stop thinking about. Then suddenly, there she is, which is great! Unfortunately, she’s also one of the surgeons heading up his training.
I was lucky enough to get an early copy and I can assure you I opened it as soon as it hit my Kindle. I immediately started highlighting. The introduction to Whitney, her best friend Meri, and Henry cracked me up. I appreciated seeing the connection between the two main characters right off the bat, because once they part and then reconnect there is a lot of hesitancy, tension, and angst regarding the ethics of their relationship. They take it slow, and I ate it up. Whitney is a badass surgeon with a lot going on in her personal life and familial relationships and Henry is a big bear of a man who is a bit older than the other residents as he pivoted from high-risk paramedic rescues to medical school. Her competency and his caretaking worked for me in every way. I was more than happy with their HEA.
This book takes place in a hospital in Boston and fans of this author’s previous novels will recognize quite a few of the background characters… Stremmel, Shapiro, Acevedo, and O’Rourke just to name a few. After getting to know Meri, and the hints of a mysterious, secret relationship with her own wedding hook-up, I can’t wait to read for her story.
Kate Canterbary never disappoints. Highly recommend.
