Asil is a character who has appeared in the Mercy Thompson/Alpha and Omega world, but who readers didn’t know much about. An ancient and solitary werewolf, known as The Moor, who has been waiting for the day his wolf finally breaks free and Bran, the Marrok, will finally have to put him down. He’s reluctantly made friends within the pack, but he remains someone who occasionally solves problems for Bran when he doesn’t want to send Charles. Blind Date with a Werewolf is a collection of short stories and novellas, some previously published, seamlessly gathered into one chronological story.
I wasn’t sure what I was going into when I opened this book, kind of annoyed that it wasn’t a full-length Alpha & Omega novel. But as I dove in, I was pleasantly surprised and glad of this more in-depth introduction to Asil. This book starts out with concerned friends sending him an email, letting him know that they’ve set him up on an adventure of sorts– five blind dates found through online dating sites. There are rules and requirements, and Asil is not one to back down from a challenge but is also kind of amused by it all. He chooses to go along with the game his “friends” have set up, all while trying to figure out these concerned friends’ identities, although he has suspicions.
Each date shows both Asil’s protective side and his more dangerous werewolf nature. I like the way this author set up each story to flow into the other. There is a thread that kind of weaves them all together, from the first date at the fake vampire ball right to the fifth and Asil overcoming an old enemy. I didn’t love each story equally, but I did enjoy them all and getting to know Asil better. There is even a romance and introduction to Ruby, Asil’s new mate. I feel like fans of this author and her “Mercy-verse” will be pleasantly surprised, especially by the identity of the concerned friend.
Now I find myself really looking forward to the next Alpha & Omega, which will release next year.
