I don’t know what I was expecting when I heard Anne Bishop was releasing the first book in a new series, maybe more of a romantasy since that is all the rage right now. All I knew was that it was written by Anne Bishop and I had to get my hand on a copy.
This book is perfect for all the fans of The Others who had hoped for more stories in that world. Turns of Fate revolves around a small police force in a human settlement directly across from the Isle of Wyrd, which is where the Arcana live. Penwych’s police force, the thirteenth precinct special investigation team to be specific, are the only police who communicate directly with the Arcana, and Beth Fahey has now joined their ranks as a junior detective. Her first assignment is to travel to the isle and inquire about a ghost gun that was used in a crime.
There she meets Lucas Frost and other residents of the isle. She learns about Destiny Park, a place the Arcana have set aside for humans to use as a sort of recreational area, many visit the hotel, eat at the restaurants, and meet with the paranormal beings who inhabit the isle while engaging in activities like getting their palms and cards read. But there are dark sides to the Isle of Wyrd and humans willing to come across for nefarious purposes.
This is an all new world, similar to The Others series in that there are multiple POVS, and quite a few storylines and plot threads that don’t weave together until the very end. But this is a completely new world, with an entire cast of new characters, both human and paranormal, and new magic. Beth is drawn to the Arcana and not afraid of them or their abilities, unlike the other members of her small police force. And they seem taken with her as well. Her easiness with them leads to her being the main point of contact between them and the police department. As the book progresses, she finds herself questioning her background, parentage, and herself.
I won’t get too into the plot and all the little plot threads, mainly because you need to watch it unfold for yourselves, but also because there is just so much going on. Suffice it to say, I was immediately drawn into this story and could not stop reading. I love this new world. I’m excited to see where this author takes this series next.
Grade- B+
OOh. I was hoping you were going to review this. Looks promising.
Thank you, Angela, for sharing your thoughts. I’m pleased to learn that this is similar to the author’s Others books rather than some of her far darker stories.
