I don’t even know how to begin this review. An epic series with a finale that was so good and honestly, everything a fan of this series could have wanted. We got glimpses of most of the couples in this series but really, this was all about Elena and her beloved Archangel, Raphael. I don’t want to give too much away but this book essentially spans a 100 years and also reflects on times gone by. At the start of this book, Elena is a thousand years old. Yep, the badass Guild Hunter we’ve all come to know and adore over the course of 18 books has spent a millennium as the mortal turned angel turned consort to Raphael. And what a life she has lived. This book is about grief over what’s gone before, reveling in the present, and joyful anticipation of what’s to come.
Without giving too much away, I want to talk about a couple of things that were standouts for me. First of all, this incredibly vivid world that Nalini built with such specificity and attention to details. It’s gorgeous and brilliant and the continuity really works.
Secondly, the sense of found family, especially with Raphael and his Seven, even Illium who is now an Archangel in his own right. Speaking of Illium, is it too much to ask that if Nalini does a spin off series like she did with Psy-Changeling, that she focus on Illium’s court. I know several key members of his court get their HEA’s in passing in this book but I’d love to read more about him as an Archangel. (If Nalini wants to take a break from this world altogether, I can’t begrudge her that either, she has more than earned it). But that sense of found family and the reaction from everyone about Elena and Raphael’s news is just, gah, PERFECT. I loved it.
Third, the book doesn’t shy away from grief, from the losses Elena has endured, from her family to her best friend Sara, who chose to stay a mortal. This part especially resonated with me because I was introduced to this series by my very good friend Melinda, who passed away 2 years ago. She never got to read the last few books in this series and the fact that she, someone who absolutely adored this series, doesn’t get to see how it ends, is absolutely heart wrenching to me.
With this book, Nalini gives her many Guild Hunter fans the perfect ending to an absolutely epic series. This book is thematically lighter – there’s some dark moments and the mere threat of war but no real violence and it honestly just feels like a slice of life story about Elena and Raphael, if that slice of life happened to occur over the course of a century. It’s soft and tender and romantic and I don’t have one single note of complaint about it.
Final Grade- A
