Review by Angela
I kind of thought the last book in the series, Archangel’s Ascension, which had huge time jumps, closed out Aodhan and Illium’s story arc, and featured Illium’s ascension and the aftermath, would be the last book in this series. I was okay with that as readers finally got the love story they’d been waiting for and a look into the future where Bluebell was no longer a member of Raphael’s Seven, but an Archangel in his own right. It felt like a good place to end. So, when this book was announced I was beyond excited, but also sad because there was a definite confirmation that this would be the last book. It would feature the couple at the center of the Guild Hunter series, the couple that started it all: Elena and Raphael.
Archangel’s Eternity is a love letter to readers who have passionately followed this series from beginning to end. To all the readers who were instantly entranced by the story of a Guild Hunter who fell in the arms of an Archangel and became something new, integrating herself in his world. Readers who became Bluebell and Sparkle fangirls, wishing for their happily ever after. For all the people who worriedly followed along during wars, and plagues, and deaths, but also rejoiced at new loves, new beginnings, and old friends finding happiness.
This book begins only about three hundred years after the ascension of Illium, but spans several hundred years after. As the blurb hints, something big is coming for Raphael and Elena, something life changing. Just when Elena fears she will lose her memories and the humanity that she’s held close for a millennium, a new spark is created, a child who will be the focal point of her and Raphael’s lives going forward.
There are external concerns within this world, Illium and his father being on the cusp of war and Raphael’s worries that his mother might once again slip into madness, but the focus really remains on Raphel and Elena and the birth of their upcoming child. Raphael has deep concerns about his own mental state, especially with the history of his parents, and has to work through the fear that he might follow their fate and hurt his loved ones. Elena has her own fears, but as always, this couple work through them together.
I think this is the perfect way to end a beloved series. I adored catching up with all those secondary characters I’ve gotten to know and love. Seeing them in the future, happy and fulfilled and finding love. This book basically wraps up almost all of the plot threads left dangling (just a few) in the last book. Elena and Raphael have always been the center of this universe, and what began with pain and death, and a Guild Hunter and Archangel falling, ends with new life and a new future of sorts for them. There aren’t as many action scenes as previous books, and there is a lot of catching up with other characters, but the love and loyalty between the characters have always been some of the things I loved most, so I was happy to see them all on page again.
I’m writing this review the weekend of Thanksgiving, knowing the release date is in May of next year, and I want to shout from the rooftops how happy I am with this conclusion to the Guild Hunter series, but also, a little sad as I will miss these characters and this world so very much. But I’ll wait until closer to release date. Thank you, Nalini Singh for the wonderful adventures and the timeless love stories. I’m a long-time reader of romance and this will always remain as the best of the best for me. Books I will keep on my favorites shelf to reopen and read again when I need a little pick me up.
