Bromantasy was a book I requested for review on the strength of the title alone. I also had certain expectations for it based on the title as well. I expected a bit of a goofy, kind of parody-esque story about two dudes realizing they were in love and overall, it met those expectations. I do have a few complaints, but overall Bromantasy is an enjoyable, lighthearted read.
As many other reviewers pointed out, this book does have a very specific sense of humor that may or may not resonate with everyone. I do not disagree with that, but it worked for me for the most part. There was some repetition of things which got old, but it didn’t put me off like it seemed to for some folks. I recommend reading a sample if you’re worried – you’ll get a fairly good idea in the beginning if you’re going to be annoyed or enjoy it.
Being in Juniper’s head for the entirety of the book was a bit exhausting. The man has no self-control and constantly is wanting to get into fights in a way that does not feel accurate for a twenty-eight year old. I will admit I did not love him as a main character. Morn, on the other hand, was great. A+ best friend. I honestly don’t know what he sees in Juniper.
This is another situation where I feel like the marketing is doing a disservice to this book. Obviously, I know cozy is subjective, but this book didn’t really pass the cozy vibes test for me personally. Here is where I am going to get into some specific details about the book so I can explain my (possibly ridiculous, I am self-aware) point of view, but if you don’t want spoilers, skip the rest of this paragraph. Juniper and Mo come across a young girl in the woods. Except, oops, turns out she’s a dragon shifter! Juniper (being the absolute idiot that he is) leads the prince back to their camp, who promptly kidnaps and muzzles the young girl. And here’s where I might be being weird about my cozy vs not cozy – I feel like if they had just been in some slight danger from the prince but it was always clear they were going to make it out okay and the young dragon was always with Juniper and Mo, that would have been cozy. Kidnapping and muzzling a young girl does not fit my cozy metrics. Mo also gets injured by the prince’s guards, and there’s a lot of Juniper going over in his head how his father was an abusive alcoholic, which also didn’t up the cozy factor.
Overall, I enjoyed Bromantasy, I just wish it had been a little cozier and more focused on the relationship and less focused on the young girl in peril. If you liked Into the Midnight Wood by Alexendra McCollum (which I reviewed earlier this year), they had a similar feel to me, so you might enjoy Bromantasy!
