Top Ten will return next week. But, because it’s Friday and we all need some smexy action here is the Olympic Canadian Bob Sled Team. OH CANADA (HI beards and thighs!) And if you need slightly nsfw action, here is a sexy Red Sox player who likes to take nakey selfies of himself. (There is a tea bag(ging) joke just waiting to burst forth…) Anyway – oh right book news. Last month I did a ‘Looking Ahead to January’ post so let’s continue on for February. May has read Continue Reading
Must I take the High Road? A rant in the making.
By Tori. I am positive I would not make a good romance heroine. At least, not a nice one. Because one, I’m not very nice. I’m polite and well mannered, but I don’t filter my thoughts and there aren't many whose opinions mean much to me. I'm loyal, selfish, a tad insane, perpetually grumpy, and anyone who messes with those I love will see a whole other side of me. The side that gives you until the count of five to straighten up or run. I don’t believe long suffering and virtuous automatically Continue Reading
Our 2014 Reading Resolutions
It’s a brand, spanking new year and the ladies of Smexy Books have decided it’s time to get serious (well, as serious as we like to get around here) and set some goals for 2014. May’s Resolutions: 1. I will read no book that promises “fans of ____ will love this!” 2. I will measure facial hair on all potential new fictional heroes. I need more beards. 3. Any hero living in a cabin in the woods, as a recluse, or otherwise being survival/wilderness man off somewhere immediately gets #1 Continue Reading
Looking Ahead to January
Don’t worry – Smex Scene Sunday isn’t going away. I just don’t have a good scene to post today – I blame the holidays for screwing up my reading schedule! But as I was glancing through my schedule to see what review books I have coming up, I realized January is shaping up to be a damn good month, or at least one can hope. I did get a head-start. I’ve read the crackalicious The Destiny of Violet & Luke by Jessica Sorensen, which has characters even more screwed up than Callie & Continue Reading
Mandi reads a Cracky, Slightly Horrifying MC Book, and Lives to tell the Tale
Have you ever read a book that you secretly guilty-pleasure loved, that you want everyone to read yet at the same time you don’t want everyone to read? This is me with Undeniable by Madeline Sheehan. This book came out last year and I remember general buzz – some loving, some hating – but all saying “whoa, this book has some crazy in it.” Last night my hair dresser went on and on about this book so I came home and thought I’d read the first chapter or so just to get a feel. But it was so cracky, Continue Reading
I Interrupt Your Monday…
…for a very important announcement. Charlie Hunnam has been cast as Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. This fine, fine specimen of a male will be nakey (omg he better be full frontal naked) on the big screen… Did I care about the Fifty Shades of Grey movie five minutes ago? No. Do I care now – hell yes. Can he pull off Christian Grey? I don’t really care. Just do dirty things naked and I’ll eat my popcorn with my girlfriends and it will be an epic night. Continue Reading
Three is a Crowd
We all know romance is fantasy. I’m sorry y’all but you are not going to meet your future billionaire husband at your local coffee shop The creepy, stalker guy you see on the street corner – is really just a creeper, he is not a secret sex god waiting to whisk you away. And you are not going to end up in a permanent menage with two hot men. There I said it. You are not going to live happily ever after with two guys. All contributing to the household expenses evenly, all taking turns having Continue Reading
The Alpha-Hole Hero. Hot or Not?
A few weeks ago I reviewed Sweetened with a Kiss by Lexxie Callahan and in the review I referred to the hero as an ‘alpha-hole.’ To me, an alpha-hole hero is one that is very alpha and also an asshole. It’s his way or no way (of course the heroine always gets her way at the end) This hero goes above and beyond being arrogant and possessive. I feel an alpha-hole hero can be a believable romantic hero as long as there is proper redemption on his part. To me, an alpha-hole is not necessary a Continue Reading
The Marriage in Trouble Trope
I love, love, love a marriage in trouble trope in a romance book. It’s different. It’s not hero/heroine meets hero/heroine, flirt, court, say I love you. No. These two are already in love but circumstances have either forced them apart, or lack of communication has driven them to feel alone. And now we get to see how they put it all back together again, which can be even more sexy than new love. In a marriage in trouble trope, the couple knows how to love to each other, but sometimes they have Continue Reading
