New Authors, New Genres – Let’s Get Excited

November 10, 2009 by Mandi 36 Comments

In the coming months, there are some brand-spanking new authors that have fine looking books coming out and there are also established authors that are entering new genres. It’s a win-win for us book obsessed!! As the good book pimp that I am, I must share these finds with you:
First up is debut author Jill Myles – she posted the covers to her new books on Twitter and I was immediately intrigued. I took the time to read the first chapter of Gentlemen Prefer Succubi, and I think they are going to be fun.
Once upon a time, Jackie Brighton was a completely forgettable museum docent.

But then she had a one-night stand with a fallen angel and was bitten by a vampire…and now she’s a succubus. Now, she’s turned into a babe, needs sex to survive, and can puts people to sleep with a touch of her fingertips.

Sounds great, right? Except for the fact that she’s caught between both the Heavenly and Infernal Host in an ancient turf-war, and now both sides want a piece of her…

Read Chapter One

Releases December 29th.

I don’t believe there is a blurb out for this book yet, but on Jill’s website it says this book features Zane, her “dark n’ sexy vampire.” – Just the way I like ’em.

Go HERE to see her post.

Releases January 19th.

Edited to add: There is a blurb! Thanks Jill!

Nobody said Sucking was easy.

With a flirtatious new figure, her dream job as an archaeologist, and two gorgeous boyfriends to scratch her seductive Itch—an angel and a vampire—Jackie Brighton is totally getting the hang of life as a succubus.

Then her need for sex spirals out of control, and she accidentally knocks the pizza guy unconscious with her touch. Great, she’s cursed. Unfortunately, neither of her jealous lovers is exactly talking to her right now.

So after Jackie strikes a deal with a crafty demon, she and her best friend Remy take a cross-country road trip to deliver a cryptic message to the nation’s oldest succubus (who doesn’t look a day over eighteen.) Their journey gets weirder with every mile—demonic possession, a charming stalker, a deadly hotel room warning—but when they get to New Orleans, Jackie discovers a dangerous catch to her supernatural bargain. Someone wants her dead (again), but has she been sleeping with the enemy?

Or do the forces of evil think they’re some kind of match for a vixen in a miniskirt?

After poking around her website, and reading Publishers Weekly review (scroll 3/4 down) it looks like these books are going to have us laughing. Jill mentions that “Sex will be had. It will be glorious. And Fun.” (*giggles*) but the romance will not be wrapped up in book one. Sounds like she will enjoy torturing us – in a good way ;)
Check out Jill Myles’ FAQ Page for a few more tidbits on this series.

Also getting a lot of buzz, is Courtney Milan’s historical romance debut, Proof of Seduction.

Jenny Keeble has never let her humble upbringing stop her. She’s made her way in the world as a fortune teller, one who convinces her clients her predictions are correct by telling them what they most want to hear. Business is good . . . until she meets her match in the form of Gareth Carhart, the Marquess of Blakely, a scientist and sworn bachelor.

Broodingly handsome, Gareth is appalled to discover his cousin has fallen under the spell of “Madame Esmerelda,” and he vows to prove her a fraud. But his unexpected attraction to the fiery enchantress defies logic. Jenny disrupts every facet of Gareth’s calculated plan— until he can’t decide whether to ruin her or claim her for his own. Now, as they engage in a passionate battle of wills, two lonely souls must choose between everything they know . . . and the boundless possibilities of love.

Read a longer excerpt HERE. I am already in love with Gareth and Jenny. I giggled and throughout the excerpt as well. Really looking forward to this one!!
Releases January 1, 2010
Courtney Milan also has a novella currently out in the anthology, The Heart of Christmas.

Another debut author, Carolyn Crane has Mind Games coming out March 23rd. I don’t think there is an official blurb yet, but is the first in an urban fantasy trilogy about a hypochondriac who joins a psychological hit squad. The second book is planned for September.

Joss Ware may be a debut name, but it is actually a pen name of Colleen Gleason (who also writes as Colette Gale, or maybe Colette Gale writes as Colleen Gleason, does it matter!). She has a new series coming out this January – and it looks steamy!

A man with no future…
When Dr. Elliott Drake wakes from a mysterious fifty-year sleep, the world as he knew it is gone. Cities are now desolate, and civilization is controlled by deadly immortals. Stranger still is Elliott’s extraordinary new “gift” – he has the power to heal, but it comes with fatal consequences.

A woman with a past
Jade barely escaped the immortals and is now hell-bent on revenge. She trusts no one… until Elliott. His piercing gaze and tempting touch shatter her defenses, but the handsome doctor seems to have dangerous secrets of his own. Is it safe to trust him with her heart?

If they are to survive in this dark new world, Jade and Elliott must work together to fight the forces that takes them beyond danger.

Beyond desire.
Beyond the night.

Simon Japp will never forget his violent past. But when civilization is all but destroyed, he sees his chance for redemption. Blessed with a strange “gift,” he’s determined to help the resistance against the Strangers, the mysterious force that stalks them at every turn. He can’t afford to get distracted, even by the stunning, soft-spoken woman fighting by his side…

Sage Corrigan has learned to be careful where she places her trust. But she sees something good in Simon, even if he can’t see it in himself. Posing as lovers to infiltrate a group key to their fight, they find that their staged affection soon develops into a desire that will leave them fighting for their lives in the night eternal…

Quentin Fielding had everything. Money. Power. Women. But now that civilization is all but annihilated, Quent only wants one thing: revenge. Harnessing a strange new “gift,” he embarks on a deadly mission to find the the man responsible for the chaos and destruction, the man he should have killed years ago: his father. Only one thing stands in his way – a mysterious, arrow-wielding beauty…

Zoe Kapoor is on her own quest for vengeance, searching for the monstrous fiends who murdered her family. Soon she and Quent join together, journeying through the ruins of the world they once knew as a desperate desire builds between them. Drawing closer to an enemy they never imagined, Zoe and Quent must abandon all fear, abandon all regret, abandon the night … if they want to stay alive.

Josh Lanyon who is known for his mystery romances, is entering the speculative fiction genre with Strange Fortune coming out December 1st. If you pre-order before November 20th, you get an extra set of goodies, including a private conversation between Adrien and Jake! (and if you have to ask me who Adrien and Jake are then you must sit your booty down and read Fatal Shadows)
Valentine Strange, late of his Majesty’s 21st Benhali Lancers, needs money. Happily, the wealthy Holy Orders of Harappu are desperate to retrieve the diadem of the Goddess Purya from an ancient temple deep in the mountainous jungle—an area Strange knows well from his days quelling rebellions. The pay is too good and the job seems too easy for Strange to refuse. But when Master Aleister Grimshaw, a dangerous witch from a traitorous lineage, joins the expedition, Strange begins to suspect that more is at stake than the retrieval of a mere relic.

Grimshaw knows an ancient evil surrounds the diadem— the same evil once hunted him and still haunts his mind. However, experience has taught him to keep his suspicions to himself or risk being denounced as a madman. Again.

Harried by curses, bandits and unnatural creatures, Strange and Grimshaw plunge onward. But when a demonic power wakes and the civilized world descends into revolution, their tenuous friendship is threatened as each man must face the destruction of the life he has known.

Ava March, who is known for her smexy historical romances, is entering into the paranormal romance genre with From Afar. In Ava’s words – It’s a m/m paranormal Regency-set erotic romance novella. It features a very lonely Georgian-era vampire and a disinherited third son of a duke: Raphael the beautiful voyeur and Aleric the handsome rogue.
No cover yet, but I will be sure to post it when it is available
And finally, Nancy Holzner is not a new author but she is releasing her debut urban fantasy novel, Deadtown. We all need to take a moment and admire the cover. I want to be her – sword in one hand, big ass gun in the other. Leather pants – could she be anymore desirable?!?

They call it Deadtown: the city’s quarantined section for its inhuman and undead residents. Most humans stay far from its borders — but Victory Vaughn, Boston’s only professional demon slayer, isn’t exactly human…

Vicky’s demanding job keeping the city safe from all manner of monsters is one reason her relationship with workaholic lawyer (and werewolf) Alexander Kane is in constant limbo. Throw in a foolhardy zombie apprentice, a mysterious demon-plagued client, and a suspicious research facility that’s taken an unwelcome interest in her family, and Vicky’s love life has as much of a pulse as Deadtown’s citizens.

But now Vicky’s got bigger things to worry about. The Hellion who murdered her father ten years ago has somehow broken through Boston’s magical protections. The Hellion is a ruthless force of destruction with a personal grudge against Vicky, and she’s the only one who can stop the demon before it destroys the city and everyone in it.

Releases December 29th.

Great list! I'm particularly looking forward to Courtney Milan's 'Proof by Seduction'. I enjoyed her novella in 'The Heart of Christmas'.

I'm also looking forward to the new Victoria Dahl contemporary, 'Lead Me On'. Both Kathleen O'Reilly and Sarah Mayberry have Blaze books coming out in January. Last but not least, the third book in Elisabeth Naughton's romantic adventure trilogy, 'Stolen Seduction', will be released on 29 December. So many great books to look forward to!

Sarah – we do have lots of goodies coming out in the next few months. I've never read Victoria Dahl..I should probably remedy that!

Leontine – Joss Ware/Colleen Gleason writes the Gardella Vampire series and it is sooo good – a historical paranormal romance. I am really looking forward to seeing this side of her!

I hate it when authors switch genres-mainly because I've lost so many great historical romance authors to whatever genre is trendiest.

'Deadtown' looks amazing! And its got one of the coolest covers I've seen all year.

Speaking of authors swapping genres – the one that comes to mind isn't so much a genre-swap but a rating-swap. Melissa Marr contracted for her first adult book. I am really looking forward to this one. Not sure when it's coming out (2010/2011?) but the 'Wicked Lovely' series is pretty steamy, and that's YA. I can't wait to see what Marr does when she has no PG restrictions!
