Review: Shades of Midnight by Lara Adrian

Shades of Midnight (Midnight Breed, #7)

Something inhuman is stalking the frigid Alaskan wilds, leaving unspeakable carnage in its wake. For bush pilot Alexandra Maguire, the killings stir memories of a horrific event she witnessed as a child and evoke in her the inexplicable sense of otherness she has long felt within herself but never fully understood . . . until a darkly seductive stranger with secrets of his own enters her world.
Sent from Boston on a mission to investigate the savage attacks and stop the slaughter, vampire warrior Kade has his own reasons for returning to the frigid, forbidding place of his birth. Haunted by a secret shame, Kade soon realizes the stunning truth of the threat he faces–a threat that will jeopardize the fragile bond he has formed with the courageous, determined young woman who arouses his deepest passions and most primal hungers. But in bringing Alex into his world of blood and darkness, Kade must confront both his own personal demons and the even greater evil that could destroy all he holds dear.

Lara Adrian takes us on a dark and tantalizing journey into the Alaskan wilds with her 7th installment in her Midnight Breed series. This story centers on the newest addition to the order – Kade. When the order learns of a horrific series of murders in Alaska, they send sexy vampire warrior Kade to investigate
and stop the slaughters. While there he meets Alaskan bush pilot, Alexandra Maguire who discovered the carnage while on a routine supply run.
Alexandra is reminded of similar attack from her childhood where her mother and brother where savaged by the monsters. Kade and Alex team up to find those responsible while dealing with the growing attraction between them.

Shades of Midnight is so full of twists and turns that even the most disconcerting will be surprised at the end. The story behind Kade and his family is woven so smoothly into the story you don’t get information overload. It’s a little sad you don’t see much of the other breed members or their mates but this makes it more just Kade’s story and that is interesting. Plenty of action in this story and you see more of Dragos’ Gen One Hunters and The Ancient. I especially like the scene between the Ancient & Jenna. It shows him in a different light and you see more of his personality and thoughts. I have a whole different outlook on him and cannot wait to see where Lara Adrian takes him.

Jenna is introduced as Alex’s best friend and I look forward to her story.
Alexandra did not endure herself to me as much as the heroine’s of earlier books. She is a bit one dimensional – always unsure and fearful. Lust for Kade seemed to override her brain most of the story and influenced a lot of her decisions.Though who can blame her? She seemed to take Kade’s vampire lifestyle in stride which is a little strange considering what happened to her family.

All in all I enjoyed Kade & Alex’s story and I will be looking forward to the 8th book.

Rating: 4/5

Great review Tori. I still don't think LA is an author for me…much like Mandi with Gena Showalter. I think if you didn't read her series back in the day it's hard to pick up the early books and get into the series. At least it is for me.

Thank you Tori. This series is on hold – I came to the realization last year that it was just mixing in my head with the BDB books. I know, they differ, but…my brain in weird. So, I'm waiting until my head clears a bit before I tackle it again :)

I will admit to not being a fan of lust overwhelming reason…but that may be because I've never experienced it grin*

Hey! Is that my review posted up there? Thank you so much, Smexy. You're awesome.

You're also amazeballs because of the great review. I can't say this was one of my favorite books, but it was worth the read. ;] I have got to get my ass on the ball and read the first few books in the series. I heard they're even steamier than this one.

I think my favorite part of the book was the interaction between Jenna and The Ancient. I'm glad you mentioned it!
