Mandi Goes Back to 1984 and Falls in Love With Jake Ryan

February 27, 2012 by Mandi 64 Comments

I recently admitted to the world that I haven’t really seen any movies from the 80’s. As in – no Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, no St. Elmo’s Fire, no Say Anything etc…Why you ask…well, I don’t know. You would think in the past 34 years I would somehow come across come of these movies. But somehow I haven’t.

This news did not get a warm reception from my friends.

There was an uproar. People started tweeting me Jake Ryan quotes, and I said – who? I think some broke down in tears.

Thankfully Tori came to my rescue and sent me my very own copy of Sixteen Candles. And my next door neighbor (*waves to Bridget*) dragged me to her house along with some other girlfriends. She gave me wine and put the movie on. I honestly went into it having zero expectation of enjoying it. I was wrong.

OMG. I’m in love with Jake Ryan.

iheartjakeryan

No really.

To everyone who said you are going to love it – go ahead. Say I told you so. I deserve it!

Jake Ryan in his plaid shirt and khaki pants. Oh yes. That dark, smoldering stare. Le Rawr! And because I am a stalker, I learned Jake Ryan aka Michael Schoeffling now lives in Pennsylvania and makes furniture. Can we say road trip anyone?

The very end – I swoon.

And to top it off, John Cusack, Joan Cusack….and Long Duk Dong

I’m in love. And I didn’t expect to laugh so much.

I assume I’m the only one who was a Sixteen Candles virgin? Anyone other virgins out there?

So I guess this means I need to continue with another 80’s movie. What should be up next?

Glad you enjoyed it so much Mandi! One of my very favourite movie is: Too Wong Foo, thanks for everything, Julie Newmar. It has Patrick Swayze as a drag queen, and I just love it. No idea if it is an 80’s movie.

How about Cry Baby with Johnny Depp?

I love 80’s movies. I was in high school then and knew exactly how they felt. I just found a set of John Hughes movies-Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Weird Science in a movie case that looks like a old style trapper keeper. I love it. Plus in came along with a CD with the best of soundtrack for all 3 movies.
I also love Jake Ryan. He was dreamy and had a huge crush on him.

Definitely watch The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. For more Michael Schoeffling I’d recommend Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken. Please say you’ve seen The Princess Bride or Labyrinth – those are classics. Fast Times at Ridgmont High? Weird Science? Better off Dead? Beverly Hills Cop? Girls Just Want to Have Fun? Flashdance? Coming to America? Mannequin? Real Genius? Top Gun? Crocodile Dundee?

Have you seen Dangerous Liaisons? Heartbreaker!

And if you’re in the mood for a tearjerker, coming of age movie (not an 80s movie but early 90s), The Man in the Moon. OMG.

Can you tell my parents didn’t limit my television time?

I’m so glad you finally joined the I <3 Jake Ryan fan club. He is such a hottie! Seriously though, the more you watch the movie, for me, the funnier it gets. You pick up on some things you may have missed the first time.

Just to tell you how much Sixteen Candles is a part of my psyche: I assigned my husband’s ring tone (and this was years ago) on my cell to the Donger singing “Ooohhh sexxxy girrrrlfriend!”

It’s a great way to identify that it’s him, except the one time I left my purse in a waiting room and stepped out for a moment. He must have called because when I returned, everyone in the waiting room felt they needed to call me “Sexy Girlfriend” to let me know I missed a call. OY!

Followed by Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller, St. Elmo’s Fire, Oxford Blues (featuring a young and handsome Rob Lowe), Pretty in Pink, anything with John Cusack in it. He ruled the 80s movies!
