This book came unsolicited in my mail box and it is a teacher/student romance so I thought I’d try it. It also features an African-American heroine and an Asian-American hero and I love that the author chose to write diverse characters.  I’ve had recent success reading the teacher/student trope, and I thought it might become my new thing. But this book did not work for me.

Megan is a twenty-one year old math major who starts her final semester by taking a cryptology class. On the first day of class she learns the professor who was supposed to teach the class had a heart attack, so a new professor is taking over. Dr. Nick Muramoto is a young-ish, very good looking teacher and Megan immediately starts thinking naughty thoughts.

Pretty fast, these two start kissing and get together. First let me say, the romance did not work for me. We barely get to know Nick. Why is he attracted to Megan? Besides being a professor, what else does he love to do? What is his normal day like? We just don’t get a lot of depth with his character. It seems like they fall for each other really fast. There isn’t a lot of sexual tension or build-up. They run into each other outside of class, and boom – they are together.

Furthermore, I did not like Megan. I don’t know if I’d call her immature, but she just rubbed me the wrong way. I don’t think she had genuine friendships with the women in her life she called friends.  All she cared about was Nick – but at the same time, the romance fell flat for me. I just didn’t care for them together – I couldn’t find a reason to root for them. Where in the last teacher/student book I read, I couldn’t wait for them to get together – I cringed in this one. Nick didn’t blatantly take advantage of Megan but it still made me feel weird. It’s hard for me to pinpoint exact examples -rather just the overall feeling I got as I read it.

I just didn’t like this book.

The recent student/teacher book I really liked was Playing With Trouble by Chanel Cleeton
