Test Your Regency Filth: a quiz

Test your knowledge of filthy Regency slang and the dark side of human linguistic inventiveness with this simple quiz!

There are twelve words. Three of them mean testicles, three mean penis, three refer to anal sex, and three are for pimps and brothel-keepers. Can you work out which word goes into which group? There are traps…

Answers below the covers!

Backgammon player

Buttock broker

Doodle

Faggot

Flashman

Gap-stopper

Gaying instrument

Gingambobs

Italian tricks

Rantallion

Tallywags

Usher of the back door

Fashionable-Indulgence_03_04_15-225x300 Viscount's Wager - 200x300

Here’s the answers! The prize for getting them all right is…I don’t know, having people slink away at parties, or just the knowledge that you really should rethink your life. But at least you’ll never be confused in a Regency romance again.

(All slang from Jonathon Green’s Timelines of Slang, an invaluable and fascinating resource for the historically potty-mouthed. Follow on Twitter @MisterSlang.)

Ok, “Usher of the back door” sounds like something a well-trained and experienced butler coined.

Also, I am fan of KJ and her dirt-talking heroes. :)

LOL! Well, I have certainly enhanced my vocabulary today. I tried the game and must admit that failed miserably… Some of those words I would never have guessed. ;)

It’s amazing to me how many of these are still around in some fashion. Shows you what words people really prize, huh? :P

Well, I won’t have to “slink away a parties” as I had only heard of one of these. (Hilarious, by the way) Maybe I don’t run in the right circles?
