Lord Munro MacLawry is the last of the siblings to find true love and happiness, and with all his siblings and their wee babies making the family home into such a domestic place Munro (aka Bear) finds himself restless and feeling out of place. His older brother has ideas for him, but he really isn’t interested. He’s far more interested in the female that surprised them while out hunting one fine morning.

He could count the number of men who’d bested him in hunting or battle on one finger- well, on no fingers, because no man had ever done so. As of this morning, he could no longer make that claim about females.

Catriona has her own secrets and stories, including why she’s hiding out in a near ruin on the MacLawry’s land. She’s trying to protect her sister and herself, but this big man keeps showing up and making her nervous. While he seems to be helpful, she just can’t help but think he’ll bring nothing but trouble.

This book is part of a series, but can easily be read alone and in fact it might be better as a stand-alone. I was put off by the behavior towards Bear by his beloved siblings. They all view him as strange and sometimes as though he’s not intelligent and yet, he is very intelligent he just decides to pretend to be dense. This odd dynamic had me irritated with the author because it made me dislike characters I previously liked and weakened them all. I saw no reason for everyone to treat Bear differently and I couldn’t figure out why Bear wanted to be thought of by less. This is my one big, huge, and only complaint about this book in general.

As far as romances go, it’s a great one. We’ve got a hunk of a man – a real skilled and tough guy few would cross – combined with a self-sufficient lass who can take him on and win. I loved that both characters are so strong, so stubborn, and so perfect for each other.

“There are lasses who would already have all their clothes off if I kissed them like that, ye stubborn woman.”

“Then go kiss them,” she suggested, even though just the idea of it made her hands curl into fists.

“I dunnae want to kiss them. I want to kiss ye. And hit myself in the head with a hammer, all at the same time.”

Well, she could sympathize with that – not that she would tell him so. “There’s a hammer, right over there.”

I also really loved that Bear really works to court and woo this lady – you know I love a good romantic build up and tension.
The only thing that stopped this from being an A level read was the siblings trampling around especially the ending. For me, the conflict and all of these characters that defied expectation with their love matches in every other book all judging and being so unsupportive to Bear was annoying and didn’t make for a stronger story.

Overall though, a fun read and as always I love Enoch’s balance of light and fun with emotional moments, and she does indeed as usual bring a great level of heat.
