The day a judge gave me the choice between going to prison or going to college was the day I vowed to stop stealing. Never again would I see something beautiful and beyond my means and take it, just because I wanted it. Just because I could.
When I moved in with Jerry, it was with good intentions. I needed a place to live while I got my degree, and he needed a roommate.
Then I saw Aster.
Blond and beautiful, good, pure, sweet, smart…and Jerry’s girlfriend. She was everything I never thought I could have. Except…maybe I can.
So I put a plan into action. Yeah, I’d probably go to hell, but it would be worth it. I wanted Aster. I wanted her yesterday and tomorrow and every possible way.
But you know what they say.
Be careful what you wish for…because you just might get it.
I have not been shy about my love for this author. I picked up her first book several years ago and she continues to write stories that I love. As soon as I saw the name and blurb for this book I was excited. I love a good forbidden love/ love from afar trope. When I started this book and saw that it was from Aiden’s POV I was extra excited. My favorite book of hers, The Good Fight, is told exclusively from the male POV and I think this author excels at giving only the male POV. She writes beta-y/alpha-lite heroes and I love it. I was a little disappointed to have Aster’s POV added later in the story, but I will say it was a necessary addition and Aster brought a lot of depth to the story.
I was hooked on this book after this opening line:
“In hindsight, the story ends the moment it begins.”
Aiden moves into a new apartment and is immediately drawn to his roommate’s girlfriend. She appears to be beautiful and funny and perfect in his eyes. Aiden has had a less than perfect life and overcome struggles and feels like she is more than he would ever deserve. I also love a hero that struggles to believe that he deserves love.
Aster is a great match for Aiden. She isn’t the perfect woman that he first imagines her to be, which is great because no one is perfect. She does end up being the person that helps Aiden see that he is more than the sum of his parts and move on from his past mistakes.
I highlighted a lot of things in this book. Checking my notes, I have over 50 highlights, notes and bookmarks. There was a lot to like. Aiden and Aster had a very emotional journey to get to their love. They both have to learn that their past doesn’t define them, they can make different choices, and that acknowledging their past is part of their present.
I have a few quotes to share:
Aster about Aiden-
“That’s what sends me over. The sight of this man, weak but still so strong. Hard, solid, tough, sweet. A study in contradictions.”
A dirty, smexy times quote:
I pull out and shift down the bed, splaying her legs wide and opening her pussy with my fingers. My mouth finds her clit again, sucking hard. I lash at her with my tongue, pressing two fingers inside and stroking until I find the spot I’m seeking. She comes with a muffled cry, and a quick glance up confirms she’s got a pillow clutched to her face. I lick her until she’s spent but still squirming and trembling, then I pull myself up and press into her again. Her pussy clenches around me, drawing me in deeper. I start to fuck her when her eyes focus, when she knows what I’m doing, when I’m all she can see and she’s all I can feel. It only takes a minute before I’m coming, neck arched and teeth gritted, the orgasm so intense I collapse on top of her, a shuddering mess, my hips driving into her welcoming body over and over again until I have nothing left to give.
I had really high expectations for this book and I think that clouded my judgement some. Especially after the book started with just Aiden’s POV I was hoping it would be just his POV, because I don’t see that very often. In fact it was a really good book. The characters were great, their story and journey to love was great. They had some stumbles with both of them doing some stupid shit, it wasn’t too over the top angsty, they resolved their conflict well. If you’ve enjoyed any of her previous books, I think you will enjoy this book as well.
Grade B+

I’m not finished yet, but I was hoping for a twist. When he was getting all the little hints and insights that maybe Aster wasn’t perfect like he was first imagining I was kind of wanting him to then realize she wasn’t for him. I just thought it might be kind of fun, not that i dont like them together. Have another who he didn’t have the insta for.

Bev, I felt there was a little bit of a twist. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone else here though :) I felt like Aiden had insta-lust for Aster. And as time went on it developed to a deeper love.

Hi Kini, thanks for the review. I don’t read a lot of m/f romance anymore, but your comments intrigued me so I checked out the sample. I was hooked from page 1, just like you. Loved the writing style, the characters, and what a conundrum Aiden was in! Then we got to the bachelor party, and I was so appalled by Aiden’s behaviour (spoiler – baiting the boyfriend to be unfaithful to the heroine), that I seriously doubt whether I want to read the rest of the book. Aiden was just so selfish. How does he come back from that, to someone I would want to root for?
Kini says
Eliza, Aiden was super selfish and it was a total dick move. I would encourage you to keep reading. He definitely pays the price for his selfishness. I know I am biased, but I loved him from page one and wasn’t as bothered by his behavior as you were. I felt it came from a misguided place and due to his upbringing and not really understanding what love is and that possibly he deserves it.
At the vert least, keep reading until the POV shifts. I think that will give a little more insight on start to build his redemption.
But if you decide it isn’t for you, I understand 100%.

Hmm, thanks for the review. I’ve seen lots of gushing praise for this one and was a bit wary about it. I want to read it though and your review has tipped the scale into going straight to Amazon and purchasing it. I’m curious to read this one even more now.
