I picked this book up after seeing it teased on Twitter. Guzman is part of #romanceclass on Twitter and this was my first read by her. The heroine is an heiress and the hero is her assistant. I love when an author uses this trope and I was curious to see how the power dynamic would be portrayed. It was no squicky at all and worked well for me.
Isabel is the CEO of a make-up company and in the running to be CEO for her family company. She takes no shit at work. She goes to a bar after work one night and meets the hero Adam. They have an instant attraction and they go back to her place and sex it up. In the morning she puts him out and plans to go on her way. But she needs an assistant. And later that afternoon she is shocked to see Adam applying for the job.
Adam is a single dad who needs a stable job. He is sweet and wonderful and the page time he gets with his daughter was the best.
Isabel really needs an assistant so, despite their one night of sex, she decides to hire him. They try to keep their job at a professional level, but that doesn’t last long. As the story progresses, the real conflict is caused not by the boss/assistant relationship but rather Isabel being able to open up to someone completely.
There were some continuity issues that kept pulling me out of the story. Additionally, Adam was reluctant to get a lawyer to establish boundaries about his daughter and because of my own life, I wanted him to take charge of that. Isabel was unapologetically demanding and I LOVED that. The story also felt a little superficial and that some areas could have been better developed. There was a lot about Isabel’s business, particularly around the race for her to be CEO and it kind of dragged the story down for me. Overall the story was okay for me and I would read this author again.
