I’ve published fourteen books in my career so far. Of those fourteen, six have been second chance romances. ONE LAST CHANCE, the third book in my ONE DAY TO FOREVER series, will be the seventh. I’m clearly a fan of the trope, partly because there are so many ways of exploring it, and partly because I only need the chance of a romance the first time around not to work out to define it as a second chance romance.

But the one thing all of my second chance romances have in common is that something goes wrong.

There’s news that changes one of the characters’ lives; an event happens that causes one of the characters to run; different views on an important issue pulls them apart. There’s a clear thing – a “this is why we broke up” thing – that ends the relationship. To get back together again, they need to work through that thing.

This isn’t the case in ONE LAST CHANCE.

But ONE LAST CHANCE wasn’t a typical book for me.

I had an idea for a friends-to-lovers romance: one friend would be hopelessly in love with the other from the beginning. Simple, right? But then I thought about what the worst thing in that scenario would be: a fake relationship. So Friend A is in love with Friend B, doesn’t want them to know, but has to pretend to be in love with them, except not too in love so they don’t find out the truth. It’s clear to everyone except Friend B that Friend A is in love with them, and when it’s pointed out to Friend B during a particularly vulnerable time in their life, they realise they’re in love with Friend A, too. Soon, they’re in a relationship, then married, and things are no longer simple.

For them and for me.

By itself, this is a plot of a romance novel. If I wanted to make things easy for myself, I probably would have let it be the plot of this romance novel. But I didn’t make it easy for myself (don’t ask me why). I wanted to untangle the past and figure out how things went wrong and why they went wrong so spectacularly. Again, that could be the plot of a romance novel. Instead, I took these two plots and merged them into a funny, sweet, heart-wrenching and hopeful novel in alternating past and present chapters, each linked in some way. You’re basically getting two romances for the price of one. And these romances aren’t only about a fake relationship. They’re not just friends-to-lovers or marriage in trouble. 

But they’re absolutely about second chances.

There is no one thing that happens to end their first chance here. My characters have to unravel all the layers of all these tropes to figure out if they want a second chance. It’s complicated and messy, but that guarantees a fulfilling HEA. I hope you’ll give it a chance!
