Freed by E.L. James
50 Shades as Told by Christian #3
Contemporary

Review by Jen

Freed by E L James is the third book in the 50 Shades series told from the voice of Christian Grey. Let me set the stage, 50 Shades came out in 2011 and I read the series three times. I read it the first time because I was seeing it quietly posted about in some forums and blogs. I could tell it was going to be a big thing. Women were gushing about it, but a bit embarrassed that they liked it. Me, too. And, of course, plenty of haters were talking about the series. I remember talking with a colleague in hushed tones about the series. We’re strong women, why are we so into this story, and unhealthy relationship?

Me in 2021 is looking at me in 2011 and giggling. What I read now…whoa. So much darker. So much smexier. So much more graphic.

With that said, I enjoyed Freed! There was something so comfortable and nostalgic about this one. It was fun to dive back into the world of Christian Grey. I can see why I liked the original series and reading about their marriage, lifestyle and family with my new 2021 lens was interesting, too. The story and power dynamic seems pretty tame to me now.

It is VERY lengthy. I was curious to read Christians’ POV, but did skim through MANY sections. I thought 2011 Christian was so dominant and alpha. He’s definitely down a notch in this book, bordering on immature in some scenes. But, if you liked the original series and are longing for some mid 2000’s memory lane vibes, check it out. No regrets!
