My bookclub recommended this one and I do love a good cowboy romance. It’s been a beat since I’ve read one and I was ready for it! I’ve also been binging Yellowstone, so I’m totally in the right mind set. Giddy up!
Flawless by Elsie Silver was such an easy, fun read! We’ve got Rhett, a superstar bull rider who is on the older side of the rodeo circuit. Which isn’t saying much! He’s only in his 30s! But, if you’ve never watched bull riding, let me tell you, it’s a rough profession. Lots of injuries, hard on their backs, and just overall crazy dangerous.
Then we have Summer, daughter of Rhett’s agent. She comes off as a bit uptight and spoiled. Summer loves her dad. She doesn’t love her job, and she’s the love child from her dad’s affair. Eeek! The stepmother is still in the picture, as is a somewhat wicked stepsister. And there is a reveal about the sister near the end of the book that was super juicy! It’s a good twist.
Rhett screws up and and pisses off a sponsor. It’s a BIG sponsor- milk! As it turns out, Rhett doesn’t like milk and is caught on camera saying that. Ouch! On top of that, he’s just generally not well liked. The audience isn’t cheering for him enthusiastically anymore and he has a bit of a reputation. Summer’s dad decides that Rhett needs a babysitter, someone to watch over him, make sure he’s not shooting off his mouth, engaging in bad behavior. And that is how Rhett and Summer meet. She’s his babysitter. Just like in normal life, she moves into his house on the family ranch with his dad and brother. Totally normal, right?
Rhett’s dad immediately likes Summer. She keeps Rhett in line, doesn’t take his shit and fits right in with his brothers. Adding some additional rom com-ness, Summer is younger than Rhett (although it’s not a huge age gap) and had a major crush on him when she was growing up. Like poster on her wall level crush. I loved the scene where he finds this out!
Flawless is an opposites attract, friends to lovers read. On the outside, Rhett gives off an “I don’t care what people think” vibe. But inside he really does want to be liked and supported. Summer, on the other hand, cares too much. She’s always pleasing everyone else and putting herself second or third or fourth.
This isn’t a complicated deep romance. It is a feel good, funny, comforting book that had me smiling and wanting more. More of Rhett’s brothers. More cowboys, please. And lucky me, there are more books in this series. Yeehaw!
