I actually read the spin-off of this series, The Ever Seas, earlier this year and really enjoyed. I’ve always read a lot of fantasy and romantic fantasy which means I am positively delighted by this romantasy trend. Not all the choices available in Kindle Unlimited are well written or even unique, but occasionally I’ll hit on a few gems. I didn’t realize The Ever Seas series was a spin-off until I got quite a bit into the first book, but I immediately went to the author’s page and did a little research and discovered there was an entire nine book series to add to my TBR. The recent news that this author had signed a contract with Berkley and that the rest of the books based in the Ever will be released by them spurred me to finally move these up to the top of my to read list.
The first three books feature Elise Lysander, niece of the king and political pawn, and Legion Grey, marriage negotiator and tradesman. These books have an ongoing plot arc and must be read in order. The first two end on cliffhangers, which means I read them back-to-back-to-back. I had an inkling of the depth and complexity of the worldbuilding having already read about these characters descendants. Let me just say–despite the daunting task of actually reading nine books (I’m currently on book five) I’m so, so happy I finally dove in.
One thing I really love about this world is the variation of magic users, and how all of their abilities complement each other. The cast of characters is rather large, and I did go to the author’s website to find a character list to refresh my memory on occasion. I also really enjoy how despite the number of books in the series, there are four couples who make up the overall series plot arc. I was so caught up in the storytelling and plot I immediately jumped into book four, Night of Masks and Knives, which begins the second chance love story of Malin Strom and The Nightrender, Kase Eriksson.
Elise and Legion are a dynamic couple, and I enjoyed how their relationship grew from near strangers to one of devotion and love. Truly fighting for each other and willing to sacrifice themselves for one another. There are quite a few open-door love scenes, but they don’t feel gratuitous or thrown in for no reason. I don’t want to spoil anything for you, because the revelations as the couple’s trilogy comes to a close were surprising.
The world this author has built is so well done. I have absolutely no regrets about setting aside the rest of my TBR to glom The Broken Kingdom series. Highly recommend.
