It’s Good to be Cheap

August 16, 2012 by admin

By May. The other day I was shopping for books based on some recommended “must read” authors that I’ve yet to try, and I only purchased one book from the more than 40 books that the six authors I was looking into had written. I found authors with backlists that are unavailable for kindle (and out of print/very expensive for paper copy), authors with a backlist that is priced at $10-$15 for kindle versions of older books, and authors who had no inexpensive options for any of their titles. I Continue Reading

July 29, 2012 by Mandi

Last night at the 2012 Romance Writers of America conference, the winners of the RITA (Rita was the name of the first RWA president) Awards were announced. You can read more about the process of this contest here. Winner for Paranormal Romance: Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison.  Smexy Books Review l Goodreads l Amazon. This is the first book in Thea Harrison’s Elder Races series which I loved. There are currently four books out, with the fifth due out this fall. While each book can be Continue Reading

Being a More Responsible Blogger

July 24, 2012 by Mandi

Because this is an important topic and it affects many, Sophia and I decided to blog together today and post this on both of our blogs in hopes of reaching out to as many of our fellow bloggers as possible. What Happened Author Roni Loren was sued because of a photo she posted on her blog. (It happened to be one of those ‘mancandy/hot man’ photos that are popular on romance sites.) She recently bloggedaboutherexperience and educated many bloggers on what copyright and fair use is and how it Continue Reading

Why Kristen Ashley is The Queen of Crack

July 10, 2012 by Tori

Smexy Books would like to welcome Amy, reviewer extraordinaire and crack smut reader, from Fiction Vixen She’s joining me (Tori) today to talk about the most addictive crack like appeal ofKristen Ashley’s books. I knew that if I wanted to extol the virtues of Kristen Ashley and her unbelievable books, I had to get my buddy Amy over here. It was because of her that I started reading her. At the beginning of 2012, Amy emailed me and told me I had to read this new author she found. She directed me Continue Reading

Let’s Talk Blogging And Twitter

July 3, 2012 by Mandi

I’ve been blogging for over three years now. Which may seem like a long time to some, and probably not that long to others. Either way, I spend a lot of my day on my blog, or just online in general. I’ve learned a lot in the past three years about blogging, promoting my blog, and the type of blogger I want to be (or have become).   There is a lot we can discuss about the blogging world. Each week seems to bring about new drama, or new rules we should be following. I don’t want these Continue Reading

More Average, Less Gi in my Joe

May 15, 2012 by admin

By May I’m looking for a few average men.   I don’t want a hero in a uniform, the ultimate alpha male, the billionaire sheik/vampire/Viking/angel either today. No, I just want a regular, ordinary, nothing special guy to read about in my romance novels.   He could be average looking, or unremarkable in his own way. Standing in a room full of people, you would not notice him except that he is very common. He blends. Perhaps he is shy, perhaps he has super secret spy Continue Reading

Where are the Rock Stars?

May 3, 2012 by Mandi

Recently Olivia Cunning unveiled the next cover for her Sinners on Tour series. This features a popular rock band, as they tour around the country finding love and having lots of sex. The first book in this series, Backstage Pass was filthy fun. The second book, not so much but I still like the idea of a book with rock stars. One of the sexiest things in the world is a man standing on stage singing to you, right? So why am I not reading more of them? Where are they? Maybe they are all around Continue Reading

The Aftermath of Plagiarism

April 24, 2012 by Mandi

In case you haven’t heard, yesterday news broke that the popular young adult blog The Story Siren, written by Kristi Diehm was accused of plagiarism in January of this year. You can read how this plagiarism was discovered here and here. In that article, they do not name The Story Siren, deciding to keep her name private. However, yesterday it was discovered that it was for sure The Story Siren who was the plagiarizer, which is why the drama unfolded a few months after the the original date of Continue Reading

Revenge Sex and Romance

April 18, 2012 by Mandi

I've read two books in a row this week that features revenge sex – where the heroine feels jilted by the hero for a past wrong deed and decides to get revenge by sleeping with him, and then dumping him once he falls in love. But of course, she sleeps with him and she falls in love, making things very complicated, yet not really feeling very revengeful. I’ve come to realize, I just don’t like this set-up. It’s fun at first because the heroine gets that evil glint in her eye. She is super pissed Continue Reading

Smexy’s Rule of Romance

March 21, 2012 by Mandi

As I’ve read romance over the years, I’ve collected little rules I live by when reading a book. I’m all about stretching my boundaries as I read, for example BDSM books have a way of making me reach outside my box. Broken and Dirty by Megan Hart have pushed on my emotional boundaries (in a wonderful way.) But I do have a few rules I read by: Rule #1. If there is going to be a rape scene, the author better tread very, very carefully. Example of a rape scene (and aftermath) handled well: Mercy Continue Reading
